Game Recap

1st Quarter:
Broncos LB AL Wilson recovered a fumbled handoff from Washington QB Mark Brunell to RB Clinton Portis to bring about the 1st turnover of the game and the Broncos 1st possesion.
7 - 0 Broncos lead
On 4th and 1, Broncos RB Tatum Bell ran the ball 34 yards to the endzone for the 1st score of the game.
7 - 7 Tie game
Redskins QB Mark Brunell found HB Mike Sellers in the endzone to tie the game with 3:47 remaining in the 1st quarter. The score followed 2 big gains by Redskins RB Clinton Portis and an offensive pass interference call that negated a TD pass earlier in the drive.

2nd Quarter:
14 - 7 Broncos lead
Broncos WR Ashley Lelie caught his 1st TD reception of the season to give the Broncos back the lead on an 11 play, 78 yard drive. Key plays: RB Tatum Bell 12 yd run, TE Jeb Putzier 31 yd reception for 1st and goal.
14 - 10 Broncos lead
Redskins K Nick Novak made a 34 yd FG to bring the Redskins within 4 points. Key play: WR Santana Moss 32 yd reception over the head of Broncos LB Al Wilson, who jumped too early.
Redskins K Nick Novak kicked another FG from 54 yds out but the score was negated by a false start penalty for 5 yds, pushing them out of FG range with 2 seconds on the clock.

3rd Quarter:
The Redskins had another score nullified when Broncos QB Jake Plummer fumbled the ball and then recovered it in the endzone, only to be sacked for a safety. Denver Coach Mike Shanahan challenged the call and won, stating the tuck rule was in effect.

A few plays later, Broncos RB Tatum Bell scored again on a 55 yd TD run to widen the gap.

4th Quarter:
21 - 13 Broncos lead
Redskins K Nick Novak scored again on a 36 yd boot to get make it a one possesion ball game. Key play: The Redskins defense blocked a punt by Denver P Todd Sauerbraun to give them good field possesion at the Denver 40 yd line.
21 - 19 Broncos win
Washington scored again on an 11 yd Brunell pass to WR Chris Cooley on a 13 play, 94 yd drive.
The Redskins attempted a 2 pt conversion to tie the game but it was batted down by Broncos LB Ian Gold. Washington tried to regain posseesion with an onside kick but it was recovered by Denver WR Ashley Lelie to preserve the win. The Broncos then took a knee twice to run out the clock.
